Novec

Novec extinguishes fires by removing heat. All fires need heat, oxygen, and a fuel source to continue to burn. By removing any of these three elements, you can extinguish the fire. Other fire suppression agents, such as carbon dioxide, remove oxygen. Because Novec 1230 removes heat instead of oxygen, it is safer to use in occupied spaces, because it does not pose a suffocation risk for people.

Description
  1. Clean agent fire suppression fluid shall be 3M Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid.
  2. Clean Agent Fluid shall have an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero. ODP as defined by the US EPA.
  3. Clean Agent Fluid shall have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of < 1 (100 year ITH). GWP as defined by the i ntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC AR5) or in U.S. EPA documentation and approvals.
  4. Clean Agent Fluid shall not be one of these greenhouse gases or ozone depleters; Perfluorocarbons (PFCs),  Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
  5. Clean Agent Fluid must have a minimum safety factor 60% between the design concentration percentage and the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) for Class A and C hazards. For guidance on safety factors for Class B hazards, contact an approved Original Equipment Manufacturer.

The FM-200 Fire Suppression System is an engineered system utilizing a fixed nozzle agent distribution network. The system is designed and installed in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 2001, “Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems.” When properly designed, the FM-200 system will suppress surface burning fire in Class A, B, and C hazards. 80% of FM-200 fire fighting effectiveness is achieved through heat absorption and 20% through direct chemical means (action of the fluorine radical on the chain reaction of a flame).
